Must be authored by a member of the AMS or a citizen/permanent resident of the United States or Canada; Must be authored by a scholar no more than twelve years beyond completion of a PhD; Must be published in English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, or Spanish; Must be published during the preceding calendar year

Article must be of exceptional merit in music studies; Individual may receive the award only once; Article may receive only one AMS award
