Instructions for Preparing a Reference Document

Official guidelines for referees providing confidential reference documents for American Heart Association research programs, including Predoctoral Fellowships, via the ProposalCentral portal.

Eligibility
Referees must be familiar with the applicant's scientific interests and abilities.; Mentors, co-mentors, department heads, collaborating investigators, or consultants contributing to the proposal may not serve as a referee for Predoctoral Fellowship applicants.
Requirements
Reference documents must be uploaded to the ProposalCentral online application system.; Reference documents are confidential and not viewable by the applicant.; Maximum 4 pages permitted for reference documents.; Avoid referring to personal circumstances or attributes such as marital status, age, gender, child care, illness, or non-professional roles.; Letters must be composed by the referent and not originate from the applicant.
