Up to $1,500 for Research Travel within North America (including a maximum of $200 for daily expenses)
Eligibility
Scholars based in North America; Must be current AAS members; Must not have received funding in the same category within the past three years (for travel grants); Graduate student applicants are eligible but must provide an advisor recommendation letter; For Research Travel within North America: scholars engaged in research on Korea who wish to use museum, library, or other archival materials in the US and Canada; For Short-term Research Travel outside North America: scholars already familiar with Korea and their topic who need time outside North America to complete their work
Requirements
Eligible projects must start after April 1, 2027, and be completed by November 30, 2027; Only economy airfare is allowed; Only airfare, ground transportation, and a maximum of $200 for daily expenses (meals & lodging) are eligible for reimbursement on travel grants; Ineligible expenses: passport/visa fees, insurance, book/equipment purchases, shipping, gifts, research assistants, translation, photocopying, supplies, survey costs, and paying...; Pre-doctoral research travel is only considered to finalize a project, not for primary/initial dissertation fieldwork; Graduate student applicants must provide an advisor recommendation letter sent directly to the AAS by the advisor
Application materials
Project statement (not to exceed 1,000 words); Budget statement (delineated by type of expense, showing travel/daily costs, other funding sources, and institutional indirect cost waiver); Curriculum Vitae (not exceeding two pages for the applicant; short CVs for conference organizers/keynotes if applicable); Advisor recommendation letter (for graduate students)

Applications must be submitted online through the AAS Grant Application portal; Portal opens on December 1, 2026, and closes on February 1, 2027; Graduate student advisors must submit recommendation letters directly via the link in the auto-generated email

December 1, 2026: Application period opens; February 1, 2027 (by 5:00pm Eastern Time): Application deadline; April 1, 2027: Earliest project start date; November 30, 2027: Latest project completion date; April: Notification of awards; Within 30 days of completion: Submit NEAC grant report and forms
