Academic level
  • Undergraduate senior, bachelor's degree-holder with no graduate degree enrollment, joint bachelor's-master's student with at least three undergraduate years completed, or first-year graduate student in their first graduate degree program
  • Graduate students pursuing full-time research-based master's and doctoral degrees

Eligibility
  • Must intend to enroll or be enrolled full-time in an eligible research-based master's or doctoral degree program in STEM or STEM education
  • Must never have previously accepted a Graduate Research Fellowship
  • Must have completed less than one academic year in a graduate degree program
  • Must not be a current NSF employee
  • Individuals who have earned a master's, doctoral, or terminal degree in any field are not eligible
Requirements
  • Personal, Relevant Background and Future Goals Statement and Graduate Research Plan Statement must include explicit headings for Intellectual Merit and Broader Impacts
  • Statements must be formatted on standard 8.5" x 11" pages with 1" margins on all sides (no text inside margins), Times New Roman font (Cambria Math for equations, Symbol for non-alphabetic characters), minimum 11-point font, single spacing, and saved in PDF format
